My best so far is one 7 minute mile which comes to running 7.5 miles per hour. That was one of my goals but i can't sustain it for much longer than 1 to 1 1/4 miles. My other best is doing a full 5 miles without stopping it took 43 minutes. So is this good, average, awesome. I really need some input from runners (newbie/marathoner) whatever. I started this journey last year october 14 and i could barely walk fast. So I think I have made some major improvements but am I where i want to be? I would like to run the full five miles at 7.5 miles per hour is that crazy. There is a marathon in feb and i just want everyone to eat my dust haahaa lol. Olympics here i come. lol haahaaa.
A 7 minute mile is an excellent time for the average runner, even if it's just one mile. 5 miles in 43 minutes works out to about an 8:36 min./mile pace which is also a very good pace. Put it this way, one typical race is the 10k, which is 6.1 miles. If you could do that same 8:36 pace for the 10k you would be among the top finishers for your age group. As a matter of fact you might even win your age/sex group at that pace.
So my answer to your main question is that you are doing awesome and should be proud!
Not sure if you were joking or not, but if you are looking to run a marathon in February I would suggest you concentrate more on adding distance to your runs rather than getting faster. You should also run at a slower pace, closer to what you'll be doing in the marathon. A typical first time marathon pace would be somewhere in the 10:30 - 12:00 min./mile pace. So think further, not faster.

but who cares about how your pace looks relative to others? Just do you, bump everyone else. You're running for you, and no one else. If you think you're doing well, pat yourself on the back...then kick some arse.
I run at about that speed too, and I finished third in my age group in my last race. I'm trying to get faster too, but I think we're both doing pretty well.
And goddess9, that's a very good way to look at it, but I'm also an incredibly competitive person, lol. I HAVE to try to beat someone or else I'm not motivated. Strange, but true: I'm that girl that peeks at the other person on the next treadmill. Hey, whatever keeps you going right?
thanks for all the replys and yes i am one of those really competitive girls that looks at other's treadmills too. I can't help it, i was brought up with sports and boy cousins so you can only imagine how they (my cousins) always pushed me to do better in a sport or game. It gives me motivation, but it's not the only thing that drives me. My mom passed from diabetes as some of you know from reading my bio, so i really really really want to win this for HER. It would mean the world to me to show her how i have grown and changed, and i could almost see the smile on her face (in my mind). ok enough of the sad sappy ****.

Fill in your info and it'll tell you what percentage of runners in your age group are below you. That said, for your particular race your chances of winning really depend on your community. You'd never win where I live, because there's a HUGE running community here, with multiple races almost every weekend. Two hours away from here, though, where they have competitions once a month, there are far fewer hardcore runners and you'd stand a decent chance. That said, even in my community, middle-of-the-pack runners run about 9-minute miles consistently, so you'd be ahead of plenty of people even though you wouldn't win. I, on the other hand, will be squarely in the middle ;)
The olympic marathoners run 26.2 miles at an average of about 5 mins 15 seconds/mile. They are INSANE, and several of them were running a full marathon every day for the entire month leading up to the olympics. Don't push yourself to crazy levels, just do your best.
In college, my mile was timed at 7min 20 sec and was the second fastest mile on my college basketball team. We were all in great shape, so...
YOU'RE A CHAMPION! Nice work. I think your times are well above average. I read an article or study that suggested a 10 minute mile was average for those who can run a mile.

those are some really impressive times, but i am not sure if i am quite ready for the full marathon. I guess i am a bit scared of not doing good enough to my own standards.
You might consider doing the half-marathon instead. Then if you enjoy that, set your sights on a full marathon later in the year.
Which ever one you choose I would suggest you enter a couple of shorter races (5k or 10k) before then. For two reasons. First you can use your race times to see how your training is coming. Second, it will get you used to the race-day experience and you can develop a routine that works for you.
